Can I Get Pregnant On My Period?

Have you been wondering this; Can I Get Pregnant On My Period? Want to know if your recent sexual intercourse can really get you pregnant? Well nobody can say absolutely for sure when you can and cannot get pregnant but there are certain periods in your menstrual cycle where you have higher chances of getting pregnant and lower chances. I’ll discuss with you whether or not it’s possible to get pregnant on your period. But before that, let’s look at what is pregnancy.

What Is Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is the period starting from the implantation of a fertilized egg or a zygote on to the wall of the uterus until the time of delivery or the time when abortion occurs. Pregnancy in humans usually lasts about 9 months which is around 38 weeks from conception until birth. It can also be counted 40 weeks after the last period up to birth.

Many people don’t know what the real definition of conception is, thinking it to be the time when the sperm fertilizes the ovum. However, the agreed medical definition of conception is the time when the zygote (the fertilized ovum) implants itself on to the wall of the uterus.

Ovulation And Pregnancy

As I have mentioned earlier, conception occurs after the sperm fertilizes the egg in the fallopian tube and the fertilized egg then gets implanted on the uterine wall. So for you to be pregnant, you need to have a mature ovum in your fallopian tube for your partner’s sperm to fertilize. The period that your body releases an ovum is called ovulation and this usually occurs midway through your menstrual cycle.

For most women, their menstrual cycle lasts for 28 days. Some women however, have longer cycles and some women have shorter cycles which can be as short as 22 days. After the period happens, it usually takes around 2 weeks for a woman to ovulate but for women with different cycle lengths ovulation may happen earlier or later. Once ovulation happens, the woman is at her most fertile point in her cycle and has the most chance of getting pregnant.

At the beginning of your menstrual cycle (when your period comes) your uterine wall is washed away making it impossible for any zygote to get implanted. Also, the likelihood that you have an ovum in your fallopian tube at this time is extremely low. So to simply put it, the chance of getting pregnant at this time is extremely low too but there is still a small chance. I’ll explain more on this so keep reading.

Can You Really Get Pregnant On Your Period?

Like I said before, you’re most fertile when you ovulate and if you have intercourse during this time, you have a very high chance of getting pregnant. If you have intercourse outside of this period, it’s unlikely that you’ll get pregnant.

The chance of you getting pregnant is there only if there’s an egg that the sperm can fertilize. When you are in your periods, it’s very unlikely that you have a mature ovum waiting to be fertilized in your fallopian tube. This is because your uterine wall is being washed away so there is no point in releasing an ovum at this time.

However, this can happen if you are generally a very fertile woman or if you have hormonal imbalances. If you have a short menstruation cycle this can also happen, whereby you can be ovulating within only a few days after your period. This would mean that if you had sex during your period, the sperm could still be alive in your fallopian tube. Then when ovulation does occur, there will be sperms waiting to fertilize your ovum.

Sometimes during ovulation there are some blood spots which you can notice. Most people think that this is just their periods and don’t take any notice of it. You should try to notice this next time; it can happen at any time during your cycle but usually some days after your period.

So as you can see, there is a chance of you getting pregnant when you have sex during your period. This chance however, is very small and usually happens to women who have a shorter menstruation cycle, hormonal imbalances, and also to women who are very fertile that they ovulate more often.
